New toilets for the primary school

The Baobab School is located in the south of Malawi, a primary school attended by approximately 1,000 children. At this primary school there were very few toilets available for the children. The toilets were dirty and outdated. This meant that the children could not go to a clean toilet when they were at school and could get sick more quickly due to the unhygienic conditions.

New toilets made possible by the Idenburgschool
Last year, the primary school students of the Idenburgschool in Andijk raised money for the Baobab school. The amount raised was €4932.87! What an achievement! With the money raised we were able to start a project to build new toilet buildings for the Baobab school:

  • One toilet building for boys with 3 toilets
  • One toilet building for girls with 3 toilets

Local involvement
It was a very special project because the entire community of Phulanya was involved in several ways:

  • In order to create employment among the local population, we had all the work carried out by local construction workers from Phulanya.
  • The local community helped by supplying sand, water and bricks.
  • The school committee supervised the project and stored the building materials.
  • The primary school students of the Baobab school planted trees, so that the toilets become a sheltered and green place!

Festive opening
Last week the toilets were festively opened! All primary school students received a meal and they planted trees around the toilets. It was special to celebrate this together!

Words of thanks
We are grateful to everyone who contributed to realising the toilet buildings.
Above all we are grateful to the primary school students of the Idenburgschool, they made this project possible! Together for better!
