RUN AGAINST HUNGER

Food shortages in Phulanya:

One Hope Malawi is active in Phulanya, a small rural area in the south of Malawi. The poverty in this area is dire. Annual floods and periods of extreme drought alternate and increase the poor living conditions of the local population. The mission of One Hope Malawi is to improve the self-reliance of the local population in Phulanya.

A combination of tropical currents (Cyclone Freddy in 2023) and extreme drought (in 2024) have caused the harvest of many farmers and families to largely fail over the past two years. The government in Malawi declared a state of emergency in March. In Malawi, 80% of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. The situation is exacerbated by rising food prices, maize prices have doubled in one year.

In our work area Phulanya, the food shortage has also been going on for too long. The consequences are serious. There is a famine in Phulanya and surrounding villages. Parents can no longer provide their children with sufficient food. Many elderly people and children are getting sick. Alternative sources of food, such as roots of plants and trees, are replacing normal meals.

What is your donation used for?

We are committed to improving the crop yields of approximately 250 local farmers from Phulanya. Higher crop yields provide more food and more income for the local community. To combat hunger in Phulanya and surrounding villages, the Hope Malawi Foundation will do the following:

  • Distribute seeds for a new harvest! We will distribute new seeds to +- 250 farmers from Phulanya in November 2024. These seeds can be harvested in March/April 2025. The following seeds will be distributed: fresh vegetables (cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, eggplant etc.), sweet potato cuttings, cassava cuttings, sunflower seeds, brown bean seeds and chickpea seeds.
  • Offer training. We will offer +- 250 farmers training on how to make organic fertilizer. The organic fertilizer will increase crop yields and reduce the costs that local farmers spend on normal fertilizer. The training will take 2 weeks and will be offered free of charge. The costs for this training consist of the materials needed for the practical lessons and the fee for the trainer.
  • Distribute emergency aid packages. We will distribute emergency relief packages to Phulanya residents who are unable to grow crops themselves, such as elderly people, people with disabilities or households where the head of the household is a child. An emergency relief package contains: maize flour, sugar, salt, soy meat, oil, tea and rice.
